Jon Hobday attends Partnership for Healthy Cities Summit in Rio de Janeiro

Jon has written a summary of his trip here -

Representing Greater Manchester (GM), I recently had the opportunity to attend the Partnerships for Healthy Cities Conference in the beautiful City of Rio de Janeiro. This annual event brings together more than 70 city regions from around the world to share learning and reflect on progress in improving population health. From a Greater Manchester perspective, we presented our work on tobacco control, including targeted communications, our smoke-free pregnancy programme, and our ambition to expand smoke-free outdoor spaces and hospital grounds. We also shared our approach to creating a healthier food environment, including the establishment of the Greater Manchester Food Partnership, public consultation on the drivers of childhood obesity, the development of plans to restrict advertising of high fat, salt and sugar (HFSS) products, and local interventions to reduce the concentration of fast-food takeaways.

The conference also provided valuable insight into initiatives being delivered in other city regions, including Baltimore’s approach to reducing drug overdoses, Dublin’s investment in active travel through an expanded network of cycle lanes, and Nairobi’s efforts to increase motorcycle helmet use to prevent head injuries.

I have brought back huge amount of learning and a raft of new contacts all of which will support us to progress our work in GM.
